Delete your account

You can delete your Chirp Campus account and its data at any time. This page explains how to do it from inside the app, how to request it if you no longer have the app installed, and exactly what is deleted and what is not.

If you still have the app

Settings → Delete account. Open the You tab, scroll to the bottom, and tap Delete account. The screen tells you what will be removed and asks you to confirm.

Deletion happens immediately. It is not a deactivation, there is no waiting period, and there is no way to undo it or restore the account afterwards.

One thing may block it: if you are the sole owner of a group that still has other people in it, hand ownership to someone else first. Otherwise the group would be left with no owner.

If you no longer have the app

Email privacy@chirpcampus.com from any address and ask us to delete your account. Include the phone number on the account — that is the only thing we identify an account by, so we cannot find it without one.

We will confirm the request comes from the account holder before deleting anything, then delete the account exactly as the in-app path does and reply to tell you it is done.

How long it takes: we aim to complete these within 7 days of confirming the request, and no later than 30 days. There is no automated queue behind this — a person reads the mail and does it.

What is deleted

Your account and everything attached to it is permanently removed from our database:

  • Your profile — name, phone number, major, residence hall, year, graduation year, interests
  • Every chirp and plan you created, and everyone's responses to them
  • Your entries in other people's chirps and plans — joins, declines, RSVPs, and being in an audience
  • Your friendships and pending friend requests, in both directions
  • Your group memberships, group invitations, and any invite links you created
  • Your notification settings, including per-friend and per-group ones
  • Your saved dining dishes
  • Your registered devices and push tokens
  • The blocks you placed on other people

This is a hard delete of the rows themselves, not a flag on a hidden account.

What is kept, and why

We would rather be exact than reassuring. Four things deliberately survive deletion, and each one protects somebody else.

WhatWhy it stays
Reports filed against youIf deletion erased them, deleting your account would be a way to erase evidence — delete, sign up again, clean slate. The report keeps a snapshot of what was reported, taken when it was filed, so it still means something once your rows are gone.
Reports you filed about other peopleThose are about people who are still here. Someone who is harassed, reports it, and then deletes their account — often *because* of the harassment — should not take the evidence with them. Your identity as the reporter does leave: your user id is replaced with a one-way hash that cannot be turned back into you.
Suspension recordsSame reason as reports against you. These are keyed to a one-way hash of your phone number, not to the number itself.
A block someone placed on youIf another user blocked you, that block still applies if you sign up again with the same phone number. It is stored as a one-way hash of your number, holds nothing else about you, is used for nothing else, and is deleted if the person who blocked you deletes their own account.

Nothing in that list can be read back as your name, your phone number, or your profile.

Two things are not instant, and we would rather say so:

  • Manual database snapshots. We do not run scheduled backups, but we occasionally take a manual snapshot before a risky change. Deleted records can remain inside one until that snapshot is deleted. We never restore a deleted account from one.
  • Server logs. Our servers write technical logs when something goes wrong, and an account identifier can appear incidentally inside an error message. These stay with our hosting provider and are not sent to any outside analytics or error-tracking service, because we do not use one.
