Privacy Policy
Chirp Campus
Last updated: 20 September 2026
The short version
Chirp Campus is run by ANIRA LLC, a Washington limited liability company doing business as Chirp Campus.
- We collect your phone number, your name, and the things you tell us about yourself (your major, your residence hall, your interests).
- We do not collect your location. The app never asks for location permission.
- We do not sell your data. We do not share it with advertisers. There are no ads in Chirp Campus.
- We do not upload your phone's contacts.
- What you post — a broadcast, a plan — goes only to the audience you chose. It is not public.
- You can delete your account from inside the app, and it permanently deletes your data from our database.
The rest of this page is the detail behind those statements.
1. Who we are
ANIRA LLC d/b/a Chirp Campus Redmond, Washington, United States
Privacy questions: privacy@chirpcampus.com Everything else, including reports about another user: support@chirpcampus.com
ANIRA LLC is the controller of the personal data described here.
2. Who can use Chirp Campus
Chirp Campus is built for college students. You must be 13 or older to use it. When you sign up we ask you to confirm that you are. We do not knowingly collect personal data from anyone under 13. If you believe a child under 13 has created an account, email privacy@chirpcampus.com and we will delete it.
We do not ask for your date of birth, so we do not know your exact age — the confirmation above is your word, not something we check.
3. What we collect
You give us this
| What | Why | Required? |
|---|---|---|
| Phone number | The only way we identify your account. We send a one-time code to confirm it's you. | Required |
| First and last name | So people recognize you. Everywhere in the app you appear as your first name and last initial — "Priya S." Your full name is shown in one place only: your profile, and only to friends you have accepted. | Required |
| Major | The main way we suggest people you might know | Optional |
| Residence hall | Suggests people living near you | Optional |
| Expected graduation year | Shown on your profile | Optional |
| Year (first-year, sophomore, and so on) | Groups and labels the people we suggest | Optional |
| Interests | Suggests people who share them | Optional |
| Favourite dining dishes | Flags a dish you saved when it is being served today | Optional |
You create this by using the app
- Broadcasts and plans you make — the activity, the time, the place, and any note. If you pick a specific venue from the suggestions, we also store that venue's street address, and show it to the audience you chose so they can find the place
- Who you invited to each one, and who joined, declined, or RSVP'd
- Your friends, your groups, and the people you have blocked
- Reports you file about other users
- Invitations you send, including to people who are not yet users
We collect this automatically
- A device token for push notifications, if you turn notifications on
- Sign-in attempts, so we can rate-limit them and stop abuse
- What you typed into a picker when we had nothing to offer you — if you look for a major or an interest we do not carry yet, we keep the text so we know what to add
- Which days you use the app — one entry for each day you open it, so we can tell whether people keep coming back. It records the date and nothing else: not the time, not where you were, not what you looked at or did. We use it only in our own totals, and it is never shown to anyone
- When you first finished each part of signing up — the first time you completed "About you", answered whether to be discoverable, pinned an interest, moved past the interests screen, sent a friend request, and finished signing up, so we can see which part of sign-up people get stuck on. It is recorded once and never updated, and it is never shown to anyone or used to remind you about a step you skipped
- Basic technical logs when something goes wrong, so we can fix it
What we do not collect
- Your location. The app does not request location permission and does not track where you are.
- Your contacts. We do not read or upload your phone's address book.
- Your date of birth.
- Photos, camera roll, microphone, or health data from your phone.
4. How we use it
We use your information to run the app: to sign you in, to show you people you might know, to send what you post to the audience you chose, to notify you about things you asked to be notified about, to show you dining hall menus, and to keep people safe. We also count how many people keep using the app from one week to the next, and how many get through each part of signing up, so we can tell whether it is working.
We do not:
- Sell your personal data to anyone, for any price, under any circumstances
- Share it with advertisers, data brokers, or marketing companies
- Show you ads
- Use it to build advertising profiles
5. Who sees what you post
Nothing in Chirp Campus is public.
When you create a broadcast or a plan, you pick who it goes to — all your friends, a specific group, or specific people. Only those people can see it, including the venue and its address. Anyone else who tries to open it gets nothing at all.
People you have not connected with can see only: your first name and last initial, your major, your residence hall, your year, and your interests — and only if you have discovery turned on.
For the two of you to be suggested to each other at all, you must have at least two kinds of thing in common, drawn from: the same major, the same residence hall, a group you are both in, and interests you have both picked. At least one of those must be a major, a residence hall, or a shared group — shared interests on their own are never enough, however many of them there are. And where the only things you have in common are one of those and a single shared interest, that interest has to be a distinctive one: a very common interest, or one that simply restates a major you both have, does not count.
You can turn discovery off in Settings at any time.
There is no search. Nobody can look you up by name, browse a list of students, or filter by any attribute. The app suggests people to you; you never query a directory.
There is no messaging in Chirp Campus. The app has no direct messages and no chat of any kind, so nobody can send you one — connected or not.
6. Companies that help us run the app
We use five outside services. Each gets only what it needs.
| Service | What it gets | What for |
|---|---|---|
| Twilio (Verify) | Your phone number | Sending your sign-in code |
| Expo (Push) | A device token | Delivering push notifications |
| Google (Places) | The venue text you type when you attach a place to a broadcast | Suggesting venues and filling in their addresses. Our server makes this request, not your phone — Google never receives your name, your phone number, your device's address, or your position. |
| Railway | Hosts our database and runs our servers | Running the service |
| CampusLabs (Anthology) | The internet address your phone is connecting from, and which picture it asked for — only when a club's photo loads on Campus events | Showing the photo a club put on its own event. These pictures live on CampusLabs' servers, the same ones TerpLink uses, and your phone loads them directly from there. CampusLabs does not receive your name, your phone number, or anything identifying your account. |
The first four are our suppliers: we chose them, we send them only what the table says, none of them is an advertising company, and none may use your data for their own purposes.
CampusLabs is different, and we want to be straight about it. It is not our supplier — it is the company that runs TerpLink for the university. We do not send it anything. What happens is that your phone loads a club's photo from CampusLabs' servers, the same way opening any web page loads its pictures, and a server always sees the internet address that asked. What CampusLabs does with that is governed by its own privacy policy, not ours. If you would rather that not happen at all, the event still works without its photo — the Campus events list is fully usable, and no picture loads anywhere else in the app.
We may also disclose information if the law requires it, or where we believe in good faith that disclosure is necessary to prevent serious harm to someone.
Child sexual abuse material. If we find it, we are required by federal law to report it to the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children, and we will.
7. How long we keep things
| What | How long |
|---|---|
| Your account and profile | Until you delete your account |
| Broadcasts, and who joined or declined | 90 days after they expire or end |
| Plans that happened | 90 days after the event |
| Plans that were cancelled | 30 days |
| Invitations nobody accepted | 30 days after they expire |
| Group invite links that expired | 30 days |
| Sign-in attempts | 30 days |
| What people typed into a picker when we had no matching major or interest | 90 days |
| Which days you used the app | 400 days |
| When you first finished each part of signing up | 400 days |
| Reports and suspension records | Kept indefinitely — see below |
| A block placed against you, after you delete your account | Until the person who blocked you deletes theirs |
Why we keep reports. If someone is reported or suspended for harming another user, deleting that record would let them come back with a clean slate. We think keeping it protects people more than deleting it protects the person who was reported.
8. Deleting your account
You can delete your account from inside the app: Settings → Delete account.
What happens. Your account and the things attached to it — your profile, your broadcasts and plans, your friends and groups, your invitations, your blocks, your dining favourites, the record of which days you used the app and when you finished each part of signing up — are permanently deleted from our database. This is a real deletion, not a deactivation. It cannot be undone.
One thing first: if you are the sole owner of a group with other people in it, you will need to hand ownership to someone else before you can delete. Otherwise the group would be left without an owner.
What is not immediately erased. We want to be exact rather than reassuring:
- Backups. We do not run scheduled database backups. We occasionally take a manual snapshot of the database before a risky change, and a snapshot is kept until we delete it — so deleted records can remain inside one for as long as it exists. We do not restore deleted accounts from backups.
- Server logs. Our servers write technical logs when something goes wrong. An account identifier can appear incidentally inside an error message. These logs stay with our hosting provider — they are not sent to any outside error-tracking or analytics service, because we do not use one.
- Push tokens. Expo may hold the device token until it expires naturally.
- Reports and suspensions, as described above.
- Other people's records. If you joined or RSVP'd to someone else's broadcast or plan, your entry is removed from it along with everything else.
- A block placed against you. If someone blocked you, we keep a one-way fingerprint of your phone number so that their block still applies if you sign up again with the same number. It holds nothing else about you, it is used for nothing else, and it is deleted if the person who blocked you deletes their own account.
9. Your choices
- Turn discovery off in Settings. You stop appearing in other people's suggestions, and you stop seeing theirs.
- Block anyone. They cannot send you a request, invite you, or see your profile. Blocking is silent — they are never told.
- Report anyone. Reports go to a person, not a machine.
- Control notifications, per friend and per group.
- Leave optional fields blank. Only your phone number and name are required.
- Delete your account at any time.
- Email privacy@chirpcampus.com with any question about your data, and we will answer.
10. Security
Your data is stored in a hosted database with access limited to the two people who run Chirp Campus. Sign-in is by one-time code — there is no password to steal. Connections use encrypted transport.
No system is perfectly secure, and we will not pretend otherwise. If a breach affects your personal information, we will notify you as required by Washington and Maryland law.
11. Where your data is
Chirp Campus is operated from the United States and your data is stored there. It is not designed for or directed at users outside the United States.
12. Changes to this policy
If we change this policy in a way that matters, we will tell you in the app before the change takes effect. The date at the top always reflects the current version.
